Bilaspur: A few days after Union minister
Jairam Ramesh termed wearing convocation gown as a "barbaric
colonial practice", a central university in Chhattisgarh has
decided that its students and staffers would wear the state`s
traditional dress during the ceremony.

"Students and staff members will wear traditional state
dress -- khadi pyjama, kurta and a Gandhi cap, while girls
would wear sarees during the first convocation of the
University," Vice-Chancellor of Bilaspur`s Guru Ghasidas
University, Laxman Chaturvedi told PTI.

The varsity has the right to decide its dress code as it
is an an autonomous body, Chaturvedi said, adding the first
convocation would be held on April 26.

Environment minister Jairam Ramesh had last week removed
the convocation gown during the convocation ceremony at the
Indian Institute of Forest Management, terming wearing it as a
"barbaric colonial practice".
