INS Mandovi to be shifted to Ezhimala

Indian Navy's 30-year old training base, INS Mandovi, will be shifted to Ezhimala in Kerala in a phased manner, top naval officials stated.

INS Mandovi (Goa), May 27: Indian Navy's 30-year old
training base, INS Mandovi, will be shifted to Ezhimala in
Kerala in a phased manner, top naval officials stated.

"The decision was taken a long back... INS Mandovi was a
temporary training base. This base will be shifted to Ezhimala
by 2009", said vice-admiral Satish Chandra Suresh Bangara,
commanding-in-chief, southern naval command, who controls
Indian navy's training aspect.

Speaking informally to reporters after the passing out
parade at the base, he said besides INS Mandovi, the
technical wing of INS Shivaji at Lonavala will also be shifted
to Ezhimala, he added.

Bangara said Ezhimala's academy is a huge complex and will
be fully operational by 2008.

"We are now taking short term orientation courses at ins
Mandovi instead of long term courses", officials at INS
Mandovi told reporters

INS Mandovi was commissioned on January 5, 1976 for
training sailors inducted under the matric entry recruitment
scheme.

This base assumed its new role as the naval academy for
conducting basic training for cadets and officer entrants to
the navy in January 1986, officials stated.
