LJP demands separate 10% quota for Muslims

New Delhi: The LJP on Monday demanded that
recommendations of Ranganath Misra Commission be implemented
at the earliest and a separate quota of 10 per cent be given
to Muslim community.

"There are reports in media that there is a thinking
(in the government) to provide a notional sub-quota of three
per cent to Muslims from 27 per cent OBC quota.....this is not
acceptable to our party," LJP secretary general Abdul Khaliq
told reporters here.

He claimed that any attempt to carve out a separate
quota of three per cent from the OBC share of 27 per cent will
create "bad blood" among "the OBCs which belong to religious
minorities and the Hindu OBCs."

"Our party demands that as recommended by the
Ranganath Misra Commission, a separate quota of 10 per cent be
given to Muslim community," Khaliq said.

"The party also demands a fair quota for non-Muslim
OBCs, Dalits and non-Muslim economically backward high
and intermediate castes," he said.

The cut-off limit for creamy layer should also be
brought to a "reasonably" low level so that benefit of
reservation goes largely to the poor section of the
minorities, he added.

Kaliq claimed that for giving separate quota to
minorities, government can cross the reservation limit of
50 per cent, fixed by the Supreme Court.

"The ceiling fixed by the Supreme Court is adhoc," he
said.

Khaliq claimed that "most of the secular parties" are
in favour of the demand of giving a separate quota to Muslims
in the reservation list.

He said that his party has had talked over the issue
with leaders of several "secular" parties. "We also took up
the issue with Congress which has not yet made its position
clear," he added.

On media reports about Batla House encounter figuring
in the NHRC`s list of the cases of fake encounters released in
an RTI reply, Khaliq said that murder case should be
registered against all accused "in all cases of fake
encounters" in the country and they should be tried.
