Naidu to meet PM for empowerment of Panchayati Raj institution

Patna, Nov 26: BJP President M Venkiah Naidu today called for amendments to the constitution for greater empowerment of Panchayati Raj institutions and civic bodies.

empowerment of Panchayati Raj institutions and civic bodies.

Addressing a conference on devolution of powers to the
Panchayati Raj institutions, organised by the Bihar unit of
BJP, Naidu said he won soon meet Prime Minister Atal Bihari
Vajpayee to impress upon him the need for amendment of the
constitution for enhancing power to these bodies.

Naidu advocated scrapping of the provisions giving
sweeping powers to the state government for dissolution of
Panchayat committees and district boards.

BJP State President Nand Kishore Yadav and opposition
leader in Bihar assembly S K Modi said that their party would
launch an agitation if the state government failed to delegate
full financial and administrative powers to Panchayati Raj
institutions.
