Cases have been registered against Raghvendra Singh, Prem Singh, Makkhan Tiwari, Deepu Pradhan, Pawan Yadav, Deepu Shukla, Shibbu Tiwari, Rajesh and Deewan at Bithoor police station, Kanpur District Magistrate Roshan Jacob said.

The district administration has been directed to submit a report so that these accused can be tried under Gangster and Goonda Acts and fine can be collected from offenders, she said.

The DM said several complaints regarding illegal mining activities were being received from rural areas - Sivrajpur, Bithoor, Chaubaypur and Maharajpur of the district.

Jacob said that she visited several rural areas yesterday where illegal mining was taking place.

The clampdown comes close on the heels of the arrest of one Rajan Singh for his alleged involvement in illegal mining from Narval area here.

Rajan was booked on several counts of illegal mining and Rs 43 lakh fine was imposed on him, district authorities had said.
