West Bengal civic elections: Repoll in 36 booths of 5 districts on Monday

Civic repolling will be held tomorrow in 36 booths spread over five districts of West Bengal, the State Election Commission said on Sunday.

Kolkata: Civic repolling will be held tomorrow in 36 booths spread over five districts of West Bengal, the State Election Commission said on Sunday.

"The repoll will be conducted tomorrow from 7 AM to 3 PM. It will be conducted in both the districts of North and South 24 Parganas besides Burdwan, Birbhum and Darjeeling," State Election Commissioner Sushanta Ranjan Upadhaya said here.

Among the 36 booths, North 24 Parganas alone has 24 with Bashirhat (6), Titagarh (5), Bhatpara (8), Taki (3) and Garulia (2), he said.

"There will be repoll in eight booths of Burdwan's Katwa and one booth each in Birbhum's Saithia and Rampurhat. Repoll will also be held in one booth each of South 24 Parganas' Maheshtala and in Darjeeling's Siliguri," Upadhaya said.

About the reason behind the decision of repoll in these 36 booths, the SEC said, "There were reports of damaging EVM machines, booth-jamming, booth-capturing, theft of EVM machines from these areas where repolling was decided as per the rules."

Yesterday, over 69 per cent polling was recorded in elections to 91 municipalities across the state, which was marred by sporadic incidents of violence that left one dead and several injured including two policemen and a poll official.
