President Bill Clinton's chief advisor on the Balkans is to travel to the region visiting Kosovo, Sarajevo and Belgrade, where he will be the first US official to meet with newly elected Yugoslav leader Vojislav Kostunica, the state department said.

Jim O'Brien -- who is to join another American diplomat,
William Montgomery, in the Yugoslav capital this week -- is to bring with him US ideas on reconstructing the country as well as the removal of sanctions that is expected very soon, Spokesman Richard Boucher said on Tuesday.

However, he said that O'Brien would be the first American to
see Kostunica since he came to power after massive demonstrations forced former President Slobodan Milosevic to accept defeat in September 24 elections.

“It's appropriate that (O'Brien) meet with Dr Kostunica,”
Boucher said. So we expect that to be taking place in coming days.
