Deposed Philippine President Joseph Estrada on Sunday underwent successful surgery to remove a cataract from his left eye, his doctor said.

The operation took only 19 minutes at the Asian Eye Institute at the Makati Financial Center, Estrada's personal physician Larry Jocson said.
Estrada, wearing glasses, later was seen leaving the institute and greeting well-wishers before being taken back to the Military Hospital in Northern Manila where he has been in
detention since April.

Estrada was ousted in a military-backed popular uprising in January and is being tried for the capital crime of plunder. He has consistently denied accusations he built up some $ 80 million in illegal wealth during his 30 months in office.

The former action movie star also has a pending petition with the Sandiganbayan anti-graft court for him to be allowed to have knee surgery in the United States.
