New Delhi: In a shocking incident of negligence at a government hospital in Rajasthan, a four-day-old baby was found nibbled by rats as there was no light in the ward.

The incident occurred on Monday at MG Hospital in Banswara, which is over 500 km from state capital Jaipur.

Around 5 a.m. on Monday, the rats nibbled at the boy's fingers, a doctor at the hospital, not willing to be named, told IANS on Tuesday.

There was no light in the ward when the rats were nibbling the baby's fingers and the family members saw it only after the lights came on.

They then lodged a complaint with the hospital authorities.

"A committee has been formed to look into the matter. The committee consists of doctors and nursing staff," OP Upadhaya, Acting Principal Medical Officer (PMO) of the hospital, said.

A woman, Priyanka, gave birth to a baby boy four days ago.

Earlier in May this year, a teenager couple from Arkansas was charged with child endangerment after their 15-day-old daughter was found covered in blood and suffering from up to 100 rat bites all over her body.

The baby had to undergo a reconstructive surgery to close the gaping wound on her forehead.
