Opposition attacks AAP govt's decision to hire Bihar cops for ACB

The Opposition parties on Tuesday launched an attack on the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in the national capital, a day after its decision to include five Bihar police personnel in their anti-corruption branch.

New Delhi: The Opposition parties on Tuesday launched an attack on the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in the national capital, a day after its decision to include five Bihar police personnel in their anti-corruption branch.

Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) state unit president, Satish Upadhyay, raised the objection over the decision and said that people from UT cadre should be working here.

“People from Delhi's UT cadre should be working here. By doing this, the Delhi government is taking away the rights of the UT people,” Upadhyay was quoted by ANI.

BJP leader Harish Khurana attacked the Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and said that he has “gotten into the habit of finding new controversies every day.”

“Right now, the courts are still deliberating on under whose jurisdiction the Anti-Corruption Bureau shall come. Has he kept the Home Ministry or the LG in confidence while making the decision? The real question is till when you will run the city by being stubborn. As far as I am aware, you cannot call a deputation of police officers without the MHA sanctioning it,” Khurana told ANI.

Congress leader Abhishek Singhvi said that the Delhi government's decision is a classic case of “plague on all three houses.”

“There has been enormous failure of central government, LG and state government. Each is escalating tension, standing on ego and there is no solution in sight. The voiceless, faceless victim is Delhi citizen,” Singhvi told ANI.

The decision by the Delhi government may trigger a fresh clash between the Kejriwal government and the LG Najeeb Jung which are already locked in a bitter turf war.

The AAP government and the Lt Governor have been involved in a public spat over his powers vis-a-vis an elected government. The Centre had on May 21 issued a notification siding with the Lt Governor.

Speaking at the assembly session a couple of days ago, Kejriwal had said that the notification conferring more powers on Lt Governor Najeeb Jung was part of an "experiment" to take the country towards "dictatorship."

In the notification, the Centre had given absolute powers to the LG in appointment of bureaucrats while also clarifying that he need not "consult" the chief minister on subjects like police and public order.

The Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP government had reportedly written to the Bihar Government after which the officers were sent to join the ACB.

ACB's request for nearly 600 officers, including around 24 inspectors, is pending with Delhi Police top brass which has been citing its own staff crunch for delay in providing the demanded manpower.

The move to induct policemen from Bihar also seems to be aimed at reducing ACB's reliance on Delhi Police as till now all its officers were derived from them.
