Ahmedabad: After remaining behind bars for seven and a half years, former Gujarat top cop DG Vanzara on Wednesday walked out of Sabarmati Jail.

Vanzara was granted bail by the Bombay High Court in the fake encounter case of Ishrat Jahan and three others.

As Vanzara walked out of jail, a large number of supporters were present outside the premises to welcome him.

Vanzara, during his stint in the city crime branch as head of State Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), was made an accused in fake encounter cases of Soharabuddin Sheikh, Tulsi Prajapati and Ishrat Jahan, by the CBI.

The former top police officer was arrested on April 24, 2007 by CID crime in connection with the 2005 Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case, and since then he is behind bars.

The court had asked Vanzara to submit a surety bond of Rs two lakh.

Vanzara was Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) in the city crime branch, when a Mumbra-based college girl Ishrat, Javed Shaikh alias Pranesh Pillai, Amjadali Akbarali Rana and Zeeshan Johar were killed in an encounter with Gujarat police on the outskirts of the city on June 15, 2004.

The city crime branch had then said that those killed in the encounters were Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) terrorists and had landed in Gujarat to kill then chief minister Narendra Modi.
