Bengaluru: Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala on Monday said democratic governance and administration are the tools for social change through which eradication of poverty and equality can be achieved.

While unfurling the tricolour at the 66th Republic Day celebrations here, he said "that is why we will not allow the democratic institutions and processes to weaken and will uphold the belief of people in the democratic governance."

"We have obtained independence, but have to put in more efforts to bring peace and happiness in the country."

Stating that India is respected by the world community as the largest democratic country, Vala said India has shown to the world that democracy was not just in free and fair elections, "but is also in giving peace, prosperity and better living conditions to all classes and creeds."

India has emerged as a powerful economy through its economic development and has made a place amongst the fast growing powerful countries of the world, he said.

Vala said India has followed 'give and take' policy and reinforced its economic relations with the neighboring countries.

"Our country has always been the forerunner in strengthening international relationships," he added.

In recent times, the central government has done exemplary work to promote world peace through its dynamic foreign policy, he said adding "peace and sincerity are our inherent qualities. On these principles, we have extended our hand of friendship towards different countries of the world."

He commended central government programmes like Swachch Bharat Abhiyaan, Janadhan Yojana and Beti Bachao-Beti Padao Andolan. Improvement in the educational, literary and cultural fields have made people prosper.

"This indeed is a true inspiring endeavor," he added.

The Governor also praised ISRO for its successful Mars Mission, and Karnataka government for its efforts to accomplish progress in all fields.

"The state government's ambitious project 'Mobile One' is launched for number of services to public. Infant mortality rate in the state has also been brought down. The state is wiping out malnutrition among children and has implemented drinking water projects in drought prone villages, which is indeed commendable," Vala said.
