Mumbai: Eighty percent of people of the Maratha community are socially and economically backward, the Maharashtra government told the Bombay High Court, defending its decision to grant reservation to Marathas.

In a 2500-page affidavit to the Court, the government defended its decision in response to a series of petitions against the move, IANS reported.
The final hearing of the petitions will be on December 7.
