The 66th Republic Day celebrations in Tripura capital Agartala passed off peacefully on Monday despite a militant boycott call across the state.

Agartala: The 66th Republic Day celebrations in Tripura capital Agartala passed off peacefully on Monday despite a militant boycott call across the state.

Chief Minister Manik Sarkarhoisted the tricolor at the Assam Rifles parade ground here and took the guard of honour.

He said that Tripura has become peaceful, but still militants from the other side of the border are trying to hamper development works and the peace of the state.

He also said that with support from the party in power at the centre, some fundamentalist are trying to disturb the secularism of India.

Later, he gave the President's Commemorative Disk to security personnel and the winner of the parade.

Padmanabha Balakrishna Acharya, the Governor of the state, in an address to the citizens, said that Tripura has made remarkable development recently and many more are in the pipeline as insurgency has gone down in the state.

Different paramilitary forces, state police and NCC cadets participated in the parade, which was followed by a colourful cultural programme.
