New Delhi: Union Cabinet on Wednesday recommended revocation of President's rule in Arunachal Pradesh after Supreme Court refused to stop the new government from taking over the state, according to PTI sources.
As per the report, Union Home Ministry was waiting for a report from Governor Jyoti Prasad Rajkhowa after Congress dissident Kalikho Pul approached him on February 15 with a 'letter of support' and staked claims to form government in crisis-hit Arunachal Pradesh.
Pul, in his letter of support, had claimed that he has support of 18 Congress MLAs,11 BJP MLAs and 2 Independents from the state.
On February 16, Congress met President Pranab Mukherjee and urged him not to accept any recommendation from the government to revoke President's Rule in Arunachal Pradesh. Congress alleged that Arunachal Governor JP Rajkhowa intends to swear in a rebel leader of the party as state Chief Minister even though former chief minister Nabam Tuki had a majority in the Assembly.
Arunachal Pradesh was hit by a political turmoil after 21 of 47 Congress MLAs in the 60-member house, 11 BJP and two Independent MLAs impeached Speaker Nabam Rebia and elected dissident Congress leader Kalikho Pul to replace Congress Chief Minister Nabam Tuki in sessions held at makeshift venues in December.
Deputy Speaker T Norbu Thondok, a dissident Congressman, also revoked Nebia’s suspension of the 14 MLAs.
