New Delhi: India now boasts of being the world’s second-largest telecom market in the world. But do you know how it all started?

Exactly on this day, twenty years ago, one phone call was made which announced the arrival of a communication revolution!

In a first for India, the then Union Telecom Minister Sukh Ram and the then Chief Minister of West Bengal Jyoti Basu spoke to each other using hand held mobile phones on July 31, 1995. This was the historic call that forever changed the way we communicate with each other.

The call made in July 1995, between Writer's Building in Calcutta (now Kolkata) and Sanchar Bhavan in New Delhi was carried over Modi Telstra's MobileNet service.

Since then, telecomminications in India has come a long way and has undergone high pace of market liberalisation and growth to become the world's most competitive and one of the fastest growing telecom markets.
