Salvage operation in Bangladesh's ferry disaster called off

Dhaka, July 19: The operation to salvage the ferry that sank with over 800 passengers in the Bangladesh's worst ferry disaster has been called off.

According to Biwta, a public sector unit looking after Riverine Transportation, the operation has practically stopped and it is now "mere formality" to make the announcement in this regard.

A meeting of several agencies engaged in the operation held today at Chandpur, the site of accident, with Deputy Commissioner of Chandpur in the chair made renewed recommendations to the concerned authorities to call off the operation.

The ferry m v nasreen-1 capsized in the River Meghna at Chandpur on the night of July 8. About 300 people were rescued and over 500 feared to have died in the mishap.
