Yeast infections: Symptoms, home remedies that really work!

New Delhi: A vaginal yeast infection is a common female condition, affecting up to 3 out of 4 women at some point in their lifetimes.

Candida albicans is the most common type of fungus to cause yeast infections, also called candida vaginitis or vulvovaginal candidiasis. However they can also be caused by other types of candica fungus.

 

It may be noted that not all women show noticeable symptoms when they have a yeast infection, especially if it's mild. Common symptoms may include:

  • Vaginal itching that is often and severe
  • Vaginal discharge that is often whitish gray, thick and odorless
  • Burning in the vaginal area
  • Swelling and redness of the vulva (vaginal opening)
  • Pain during sex
  • Burning sensation while urinating
  • Vaginal rash

Paying attention to the signs and symptoms is the first step to getting treatment. Consult with your doctor if this is the first time that you've had yeast infection symptoms or your symptoms don't disappear despite antifungal medications or you show other symptoms as well.

Home remedies for yeast infections

In case, you would like to avoid allopathic medications, there are some popular natural home remedies that can be found in every kitchen. These include:

Garlic – you can eat a fresh garlic cloves daily or make a paste of it and apply directly on the affected areas. It is highly effective in treating any kind of yeast infection.

Coconut oil – just like garlic, coconut oil has antifungal properties and is effective in treating yeast infections. You can apply coconut oil on the affected areas externally three times a day.

Yogurt – you can take yogurt orally or apply it on the affected skin area, allowing it to sit for at least 20-30 minutes, or even overnight. There is evidence to support about yogurt being a good remedy for yeast infections.
