In a semi-final clash of the ATP World Tour Finals, Austria's Dominic Thiem defeated Serbian World no.1 Novak Djokovic 7-5, 6-7(10), 7-6(5). In the match, Djokovic saved four match points in the second set but it ultimately went in vain as Thiem won the deciding set. Dominic Thiem, thus, reached his second consecutive title match of the prestigious tournament.
Top-ranked player Novak Djokovic of Serbia feels Italian teenager Jannik Sinner leads the pack of `Next Gen` players with the potential of becoming a future World No.1. Jannik Sinner, who clinched the Next Gen ATP Finals in 2019 and is currently ranked 43rd, booked his place in his maiden Grand Slam quarter final at this month`s French Open. Djokovic believes Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alexander Zverer are already established players and would need to sustain their performances over a period to wrest the top ranking.
The ATP 250 tournament was scheduled to run from October 19-25, while the WTA Premier event was due to be held from October 26-November 1. The ATP confirmed that other European events in the same week in Antwerp and Cologne are scheduled to go ahead as normal. The decision also does not impact hosting of the ATP`s St Petersburg Open, scheduled for October 12-18.
Women professionals are taking part in discussions on joining Novak Djokovic`s breakaway Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA), the men`s world number one said on Friday. The Serbian also expressed dissatisfaction over the opposition his new players' body has received from some players. Last month, Djokovic resigned as head of the ATP player council before the U.S. Open, along with members Vasek Pospisil, John Isner and Sam Querrey, to form the PTPA. The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) was set up by players in 1972 to represent the men`s athletes while the WTA represents the women's tour.
Djokovic is trying to form a new body to represent players and has resigned from his position as the president of players council of ATP. Canadian Vasek Pospisil, a member of the Djokovic-led council, has also resigned as the players representative of 51-100 positions. The new body will be called the Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA) and will provide players with a self-governance structure that is independent from the ATP.
Bryan brothers' 25-year-long professional careers together have come to an end which began with the US Open in 1995. Between 2005 and 2006, the Bryan brothers also scripted an Open Era record by featuring in seven consecutive men's doubles Grand Slam finals. Last year, the duo was presented with ATP Tour Fans' Favourite Team award for the 14th time.
Del Potro has undergone surgery on his troublesome right knee for the third time in less than two years. The former World No.3 has not played since June 2019, when he suffered a fractured patella for the second time in nine months. In 2018, he won two ATP titles and reached the final of the US Open, where he was beaten by Novak Djokovic.
