Halep claimed the Italian Open in Rome on Monday after second seed Karolina Pliskova retired from the final with injury when she was down 6-0, 2-1. Victory gave Halep her first title in Rome and her third consecutive title of the year after wins in Dubai -- before the COVID-19 hiatus -- and Prague last month. Halep will head to Roland Garros as one of the firm favourites with world number one Ash Barty and U.S. Open champion Naomi Osaka both skipping the tournament this year.

Novak Djokovic to clash with Diego Schwartzman in Italian Open final
Novak Djokovic defeated Casper Ruud in blustery conditions 7-5, 6-3 on Sunday to reach the Italian Open final. He will face Diego Schwartzman in Monday`s final after the Argentine held his nerve to beat Canadian youngster Denis Shapovalov 6-4 5-7 7-6 (4) in a dramatic second semi-final. The Serbian World No. 1, Djokovic, remains on course to win his 36th ATP Masters 1000 crown and overtake Rafael Nadal on the all-time list.

Rafael Nadal refused to make excuses for his shock defeat by Diego Schwartzman in the quarter-finals of the Italian Open. Nine-time Rome champion Nadal looked well off the pace in his 6-2, 7-5 loss to 15th-ranked Argentine Diego Schwartzman . Nadal, who skipped the U.S. Open in New York due to COVID-19 concerns, said he would regroup before heading to Paris, where he will bid for a record-extending 13th title.

Rafael Nadal beat fellow Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta 6-1, 6-1 in the Italian Open in Rome on Wednesday. Nadal, who received a bye into the second round, has not played a tournament since winning his 85th singles title in Acapulco.
