Speaking at the foundation day event of the Trinamool Congress student wing, Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), held at Mayo Road in central Kolkata, Banerjee reiterated her accusation that the Centre is conspiring to implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC) under the guise of the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR).
The West Bengal Chief Minister also urged the people of the state to ensure that their names feature on the electoral roll to avoid getting sent to detention camps under the garb of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) implementation.
The Citizenship (Amendment) Act rules are under preparation, the Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai informed Lok Sabha.
Also, no decision has been taken on a nationwide National Register of Citizens (NRC).
Around 10,000 names will be deleted from the final NRC in Assam as many "ineligible persons" and their descendants were included in the list.
State coordinator Hitesh Dev Sarma wrote to all the Deputy Commissioners and District Registrar of Citizen Registration (DRCR) on Tuesday.
He directed them to issue speaking orders for the deletion of such names.
The protesters also demanded a fair investigation into the northeast Delhi violence and a compensation of Rs 1 crore to the victims.
Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla on Monday (March 2) stressed that the NRC will have no implications for Bangladesh and its people and the process is "entirely internal to India".
Bihar Assembly on Tuesday (February 25) passed a resolution to not implement the NRC in the state.
Praising the people he said, "Your strength and love has spread to the entire country. Every city is coming up with several Shaheen Baghs."
