Guwahati: Assam assembly today condemned the attack on the Foreigners Tribunal member in Goalpara and expressed satisfaction over steps taken by the state government to ensure security of the judiciary.

"The entire house condemns the attack on the member of the Foreigners Tribunal.

We believe that the judiciary should be independent and they should be provided with proper security," Assam Assembly Speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami said.

"The House also expresses satisfaction over the steps taken by the home Department to give security to the judiciary," he said during a discussion on the issue.

Replying to the issue raised by BJP MLA Ashok Singhal, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary said 10 miscreants have been arrested along with the main accused.

Patowary also informed that various measures have been taken so that no such untoward incident is repeated in future in the state.

On February 16, around 25 advocates entered the chamber of Foreigners Tribunal Member Ajay Phukan and started arguing over a case of 'D' (doubtful) voter.
Suddenly an agitated advocate assaulted Phukan and damaged court properties.
