New York: Russell Peters defended casting former Playboy playmate Pamela Anderson as the Virgin Mary for his Canadian comedy special on Monday.
Peters, 41, had announced on Nov 15 that the former ‘Baywatch’ star would play the Holy Mother in ‘A Russell Peters Christmas,’ which is set to air Dec. 1, while the funnyman was to fill the role of Mary’s Biblical husband, Joseph. “I didn’t even think about the other side of Pam Anderson, which is so long ago. Let’s give a chick a break already,” the New York Post quoted Peters as telling CTV News. “There’s nothing really unholy about it. It’s a celebration. “I was kind of hoping we’d have a kissing scene, but that didn’t happen,” he added. The National Catholic Register criticized the move, declaring that irreverence is so commonplace that it is now the norm. An editorial on the Catholic Vote website called the casting “overtly mocking true faith.” ANI
