Karaikal: Super Airport Infrastructure India (SAIIPL) on Saturday said construction work on the country's first fully private greenfield airport here is scheduled to commence in May.
The company has obtained all necessary clearances from regulatory agencies, including permission from the Civil Aviation Ministry and no-objection certificate from the Puducherry government, SAIIPL Chairman J V Chowdhary said.

SAIIPL expects that the airport would initially attract about 550 inbound and outbound passengers daily. About 12 flights (to and fro) could be operated daily. Over the years, the number of passengers could touch even 4,000 per day.
The company was planning to complete the Rs 60 crore first phase within November this year, he said, adding, Karaikal would immediately gain air connectivity with Chennai, Tiruchirappalli, Bangalore, Kochi, Goa, Mumbai and New Delhi.
