Washington: Highly acclaimed Hindi drama "Jisne Lahore Nahi Dekha..." set on the incidents of 1947, when the sub-continent was chaotically partitioned into India and Pakistan, will be staged soon in the US.
The play would be staged at prestigious Kennedy Centre in Washington next month. The 1947 partition of the Indian sub-continent saw the largest migration in human history.
Written by playwright Ashgar Wajahat, the drama is set in 1947 during the time of partition. Organisers of the play said they are staging it to commemorate the recent demise of Habib Tanvir, who first brought the play into limelight amid rare reviews in 1992.
The play is soon being turned into a Bollywood movie by Raj Kumar Santoshi. Talking to Indian and Pakistani journalists, play producer Pushpa Dashottar said it is being staged on two days - August 14; on the occasion of Independence Day of Pakistan; and August 15, India`s Independence Day.
The play comprises of Indian and Pakistani stage artists; said its director Umesh Agnihotri. It is being produced by Phoenix Rising Media Group. The play is also being staged in New York, London and Sydney.
The play takes place in the year 1947, when the Indian sub-continent was chaotically partitioned into India and Pakistan, as the world saw the largest migration in human history. The displaced population crossed the border with minimal possessions, hoping that the newly created "Custodian`s" office would allot them a home vacated by the refugees in the other country, said Agnihotri.
This is a riveting story of the interaction between a Muslim refugee family that migrates from Lucknow in India to Lahore in Pakistan and the mother of a Hindu refugee family who is somehow left behind when others in her family leave for India, he said.
