How game of golf won ‘The King’s Speech’ its Oscars

It has emerged that British historical drama film ‘The King’s Speech’ would have missed winning its Oscars had it not been for a game of golf.

London: It has emerged that British historical drama film ‘The King’s Speech’ would have missed winning its Oscars had it not been for a game of golf.
Joan Lane, a theatrical agent, read the script in 2007 and was convinced that she had a hit play on her hands, but when she sent it to stage producers around the country, no one was interested.
But she was not put off by the lack of interest and staged a reading at a north London theatre, where two of the guests were Richard and Meredith Hooper. “My husband played golf with Richard,” the Telegraph quoted Lane as explaining. Meredith enjoyed the reading so much that she rang her son, Tom, and told him it would make a great film. The film about George VI’s battle to overcome a crippling stammer went on to dominate the Academy Awards, winning best picture, best actor for Colin Firth, best director for Tom Hooper and best original screenplay.
