New Delhi, April 13: Kalki of ‘Dev D’ fame is ready to drop inhibitions and clothes on stage. The debutante on big screen is now to be a debutante onstage in Delhi. Though ‘Dev D’ required no steamy sequences from Kalki Koechlin, she has no reservations about doing it – onscreen or on the stage. The fresh actor’s daring can fully be realised when we consider that unlike in movies, where intimate scenes have to be shot before a limited number of crew, theatre demands action before a live audience!
Nicole Kidman and Daniel Radcliffe showed this kind of guts and boldness in ‘The Blue Room’ and ‘Equus’ respectively. Her debuting play is based on a folk tale from ‘Women Who Run With The Wolves’. Kalki has written the script herself. Her character, a young wife, tries to keep her husband - a writer - grounded in reality. Asked by a news daily, if India is ready for such boldness on stage, Kalki is prompt in reminding that Indian audience is more open now. She said, “‘The Vagina Monologues’ was accepted here, despite the explicit sexual conversation.” Stating her position clear, she said about nudity onstage, “If the context demands it, I am ready to push the bar.” This is her first play in Delhi. Her first two plays, ‘Casanova’ and ‘Hair’, were with ‘The Company Theatre’ last year. Her current play, ‘The Skeleton Woman’, has been produced by ‘Dev D’ director Anurag Kashyap, also her live-in partner.
