Review: ‘Tanu Weds Manu’ is a simple story colourfully told

Even though the backdrop has been used in several films in the past,`Tanu Weds Manu` manages to strike a chord with the viewers.Director Anand L Rai manages to create a colourful backdrop of a small town with some very interesting characters. The movie brings a smile in audience's face for its simplicity. Watch this one for Maddy's class act and Kangna's hatke performance.

There is something about stories based in small towns. Even though the backdrop has been used in several films in the past, they somehow manage to strike a chord every time. ‘Tanu Weds Manu’ is one of such films. Set in the town of Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, ‘Tanu weds Manu’ narrates the story of Tanu( Kangna Ranaut) who is in love with a local goon of Lucknow (played fantastically by Jimmy Shergill) but is being forced by her family to get married to a NRI doctor (R Madhavan). Although in love with our heroine, Manu decides to help Tanu to get her love only to confuse her further about whom actually she is in love with. Did anyone say ‘Jab We Met’? Even though similarities between the two films are glaring in some parts, the film manages to create a separate identity for itself. Director Anand L Rai manages to create a colourful backdrop of a small town with some very interesting characters. In many of the scenes, you smile thinking about someone you know, who resembles one of the characters in the film. Anant Rai not only manages to create a small town atmosphere with extended families, friends, and even local goons amply thrown in, but he also manages to make each character distinct from each other. The story tends to lag a bit in the second half but picks up momentum near the climax. Amongst the actors, R Madhavan pulls off the sweet shy Manu’s role with élan. While watching him on screen, one can’t help but wonder that why such a talented actor is not seen that often in Hindi films. The film presents Kangna in a new avatar as a small town motor-mouth girl, who doesn’t mind taking a nip of alcohol before meeting a prospective groom. It’s a welcome change to see her in such a role. She was being type casted into doing roles of alcoholics, depressive women (‘Gangster’, ‘Woh Lamhe’, ‘Fashion’) for a long time now. Maddy’s best buddies in the film, actors Deepak Dobriyal and Eijaz Khan add few laughs in the whole set up and play their part well. Jimmy Shergill as Kangna’s boyfriend does a brilliant job as a Lucknowi goonda. Music by Krsna, which is already ruling the charts, is enjoyable. Watch it for just fun. There are certain loopholes in the story, but you can easily ignore them because the characters instantly connect with the audience. Rating: Three cheers for this one!
