New Delhi: Ten French graffiti artists bring their art to India thus using the country as a terrain of artistic exploration. On the occasion of Bonjour India, The Embassy of France and culturesfrance present ‘Surfaces Actives….art in urban space”. Over the past 30 years, France has become an open air museum for the graffiti movement. The canvas for the artist varies from walls, advertising hoardings to trucks and metros. Artists make use of paint, posters, stencils and installations to create their own personal pictorial style. Ten artists – Jef Aerosol, Speedy Graphito, Jean Faucheur, Antonio Gallego et Jose Jose Maria Gonzalez, Jonone Syckoze, Mosier hat, RCF1 et L’Atlas – representing different periods of the contemporary artistic movement, bear witness to the diversity of Urban art. Even though the artists have diverse methods of expression, their canvas, the street, remains the same. The street offers artists the opportunity to engage the public. Thus, each passer-by regards themselves as spectators. “We are pleased to present street art in India. It is a popular form of art in France and has played an important part in defining the cities. We intend to present this highly engaging form of art as a forum for creative interaction with the country and its people.” Said Catherine Mairet, Curator, Street Art. French urban art is an International benchmark today. The diversity of urban art is seen in the form of collages, colouring, mosaics, and paints. Street art makes its mark on walls and brings together artists with the same ideal – of offering their art to public. Urban art plays an important role in drawing up a universal artistic language. Creations of the French graffiti artists will be on display from 16th January 2010 – 23rd January 2010, Alliance Franciase Lawns, 10:00 am – 5:00 pm.
