New Delhi: Sometimes social media can be a bane, spreading misinformation and rumours galore. And given the fact that some information can be of a highly sensitive nature, any misleading news about it can negatively mould public opinion.
We witnessed precisely such a case recently. A rumour went around social media alleging a matrimonial alliance between RBI Governor Urjit Patel and the Ambanis. And soon the story spread like wildfire.
According to the ‘viral’ social media gossip, Urjit Patel is married to Nita Ambani’s sister. Now, it isn’t a crime to marry an Ambani. But in the wake of the government’s demonetisation drive, the ‘viral’ news appeared to subtly imply that with Patel in a marital alliance with Nita’s sister, the Ambanis might be privy to government secrets.
However, the truth is, the RBI Governor is NOT married to Nita Ambani’s sister. A report in The Times of India confirmed that Nita only has one sister – Mamta Dalal – who is a teacher at a school run by the Ambanis.
So next time you read something on social media, be sure to verify the facts and not just blindly believe in random rumours.
