New Delhi: At least two people were killed and five others injured when a portion of the massive Ghazipur landfill site in east Delhi caved in on Friday afternoon. Due to the cave-in, a car and two two-wheelers fell into the Kondli canal which flows near the landfill site.
The riders of both the two-wheelers have died. One of the victims is a girl while the other is a man. Both bodies have been recovered, Delhi Police officials confirmed.
There were two occupants in the car and both of them have been rescued. About four-five vehicles are reportedly trapped under the debris.
The site is spread across 70 acres. According to Delhi Fire Brigade officer Francis Browne, the cave-in took place due to heavy rains as water seeped in resulting in the landfill loosening up and collapsing.
East Delhi MCD mayor Neema Bhagat confirmed that two people have been killed in the incident. She blamed the Delhi government for the poor maintenance of the site.
The rescue operations led by a team of NDRF personnel are currently underway.
Traffic has been closed on the route.
