London: The Duchess of Cambridge is being given private lessons on the workings of Britain’s most respected institutions to prepare for a lifetime of royal duties, aides have disclosed.
She is being given private tutorials with experts on government, the arts and the media to give her a thorough knowledge of the establishment she will represent one day.
“The Duchess is being briefed on how the State works, getting to know our national institutions better and learning more about organisations such as the arts, the media and the government,” the Telegraph quoted a Royal source as saying.
“It is a process that will carry on for several months but is being done privately.
“As well as meetings at St James’s Palace, the Duchess is spending time carrying out private research of her own,” the source added.
The highly structured approach to preparing the Duchess for life as a senior member of the Royal family is in marked contrast to the experience of the Duke’s late mother, Diana’ Princess of Wales, who complained of being thrown into royal duties with no coaching at all.
Kate has so far carried out only one official engagement, when she and the Duke visited riot-hit areas of Birmingham last month.
But her duties are set to increase when the palace reveals in the New Year the charities that she will be supporting in her role as royal patron.
Until the charities she will officially be supporting are announced, the Duchess’s official engagements will be kept to around one a month, to give her time to get used to her new life.
Next week, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will open a new childrens’ centre at the Royal Marsden cancer hospital in Sutton, Surrey, of which the Duke is president.
