Mumbai: While Brahma and Vishnu had found their consorts in Saraswati and Lakshmi respectively, Lord Shiva remained a bachelor for years. He was engrossed in his deep meditation and cared the least about his singlehood. Lord Brahma was concerned because it was important to bring Lord Shiva into the marital or Grihasta fold. Hence, after expressing his concern to Vishnu, Brahma decided to get his grand-daughter Sati married to Shiva. Thus Sati was born to Brahma’s son Daksha.

Since childhood, Sati was fond of Shiva. Since she was born to a king, she had a number of impressive alliances coming her way but she rejected all of them because she wanted to marry Shiva.

She did penance for many years. Despite being raised in a royal family, Sati chose to observe rigorous penance by giving up on food and water. Her sincere devotion and love won Shiva’s heart and he appeared before her to accept her proposal.

Thus, Sati was able to bring Shiva from the Bairagya to Grihasta fold.
