London: A government research has suggested that people become less lonely and happier with their local neighbourhood as they grow older.

The survey for the Department for Work and Pensions showed that feelings of social isolation were more common among the young, reports a newspaper.

Based on a survey of 1,867 adults, the report looked at expectations and experiences of later life in Britain. The researchers suggested, "The peak age for feeling isolated is between 50 and 59, which may relate to children leaving home and, for some people, early retirement". Seventy-two per cent of people aged 75 and over also believed their neighbourhood was "definitely" a good place to grow old. Older people were also more optimistic about their own life expectancy then the young. ANI
