New Delhi: It's a famous saying that 'a dog is a man's best friend' and, to acknowledge this relationship, a community in Karnataka has established a temple to worship dogs. No, we are not kidding.

This temple has idols of two dogs. It is located in Chennapatna Taluk of Ramanagar district in the state of Karnataka. It is believed that a dog was one of the first animals who became a pet for humans. Thus, nothing can go wrong in their village if they worship its idol which stands for faithfulness.

It's not the first time that an animal is being worshipped in Hinduism. For instance, cows are addressed as 'Gau Mata' in India and is worshiped with great zeal.

Also, many animals act as a carrier (or vahana) of various deities in Hinduism like Nandi (the white bull) is the carrier of lord Shiva, Rat carries the elephant headed god- Ganesha, lord Durga's vahana is a lion etc. Therefore, animals are given a special place in Hindu religion and this holy practice highlights that God exists in every living creature!
