The significance of Guru Purnima

New Delhi: The word 'Guru' is defined as a person who leads people on the path to enlightenment. The Sanskrit root 'gu' means darkness or ignorance, and 'ru' denotes the remover of that darkness.

Guru Purnima is an Indian festival dedicated to spiritual and academic teachers.

Hindus attach utmost importance to gurus/teachers, who can be God or any enlightened human being who teach you about the ways towards enlightenment.

The full moon day in the auspicious month of Ashad (Hindu month) is practised as Guru Purnima.

The day marks paying gratitude to teachers or gurus and receive their blessings. This pious day is also considered as one of the best for meditation and is best for yogic sadhanas.

All those who are on the path of enlightenment in any away should practise meditation on this day.

Purnima, which is also known as the full moon night, has the moon shining at its best and blessing all with its light. This day is also called the 'Ashad Purnima' according to the Hindu calendar.

Every follower should worship lord Vishnu on this day and recite 'Vishnu Sahatranam' i.e the 1000 names of Lord Vishnu and channelise their energies.
