Superman coins unveiled in Canada to celebrate superhero`s 75th birthday

Superman`s 75th birthday, the Royal Canadian Mint on Monday, unveiled seven new coins at Toronto`s Dundas Square.

Mumbai: Superman`s 75th birthday, the Royal Canadian Mint on Monday, unveiled seven new coins at Toronto`s Dundas Square. The iconic hero, who was co-created by Canadian Joe Shuster and his American collaborator Jerry Siegel, is famous throughout the world as an archetype for Truth and Justice.
The coins, released in gold and silver in lenticular designs depict different key moments in Superman`s 75 year history. Superman was co-created by Canadian Joe Shuster and his American collaborator Jerry Siegel. Some of the art is from the original comics released in 1938 and one of the new coins displays his new uniform as seen in DC comics` The New 52. Superman, although being considered an American Cultural Icon, has many ties to Canada as well. Apart from the obvious, Joe Shuster being Canadian, many people involved with Superman media have Canadia ties. Several Smallville actors, Erica Durance who plays Lois Lane, Aaron Ashmore who plays Jimmy Olsen and Kristin Kreuk who plays Lana Lang are Canadian. Smallville itself is filmed in British Columbia. Margot Kidder, who played one of the most famous versions of Lois Lane in four Superman movies along side Christopher Reeve is Canadian and was born in Yellowknife, in Northern Canada. There are a number of other people of Canadian roots that can be tied to Superman. Each of the 14-karat gold coins bearing the original design of Shuster sold at $750.
