Noted Indian writer Ruskin Bond is known for writing children's literature. He has a notable contribution in the growth and progress of writing culture in the country—especially for kids. The Room On The Roof
This book is Bond's first attempt at writing a full-fledged novella. The book has more of an autobiographical undertone which become clear as it talks about an orphaned sixteen-year-old Anglo-Indian boy named Rusty, who stays in the hills of Dehradun. Bond wrote this when he was seventeen and even won the John Llewellyn Rhys Memorial Prize in 1957.
A Flight Of Pigeons
Set in the backdrop of 1857, this novel talks about Ruth Labadoor and her family (who are British) who take help of Hindus and Muslims to reach their relatives. It has both the elements of of fiction and non fiction, reportedly. Interestingly, the novel was adapted for the Bollywood big screens. The film named 'Junoon' (1978) was based on the book, which starred Shashi Kapoor in the lead. It was directed by Shyam Benegal.
The Blue Umbrella
Like Bond's earlier book, this one too got adapted for a Hindi movie by the same name. Veteran actor Pankaj Kapur starred in it. The 1980 book revolves around the a small girl in Himachal Pradesh and her new blue umbrella which he bargains for her necklace. The film was directed by Vishal Bhardwaj in 2005 and even won the National Film Award for Best Children's Film.
Angry River
This 1972 children's book is about a girl named Sita, who stays with her grandparents on an island. This novel was translated into Dutch, French and Hindi after he was published in English. The book became hugely popular among the kids and is still widely read.
Road To Mussoorie
This classic Ruskin Bond novel takes you to the beautiful landscape of Mussorie—the place which is vividly described the author. The author has talked about his own journey in the green, lush terrain of the hill side, where people in the form of friends, relatives intertwine in the storyline. The writer is known for bringing out the best of children's writing where he uses a lot of humour too.
