`42` tops weekend box office with 27.3-million-dollar earning
Washington: Baseball player Jackie Robinson`s biopic `42` has emerged as the top grosser at the US box office by raking in 27.3 million dollars, according to the studio estimates on Sunday.
The baseball film - about the first black player in Major League Baseball - took in 27.3 million dollars to emerge the highest grosser at the weekend box-office domestically, CBS News reported.
While Tom Cruise`s sci-fi film ` Oblivion` grossed 61.1 million dollars at its international launch in 52 countries.
Released by Warner Bros., `42` easily beat domestic competition from an established franchise like `Scary Movie 5.` The Weinstein Co. sequel, with a cast including Charlie Sheen and Lindsay Lohan, opened in second-place with 15.2 million dollars, the smallest debut for the horror-comedy series.
The previous week`s top draw, Sony`s horror remake `Evil Dead` fell to fifth place with 9.5-million-dollar earnings, raising its domestic haul to 41.5-million-dollars.
In limited release, director Terrence Malick`s drama ` To the Wonder ` made a modest start, raking in 130,000 dollars in 18 theatres for an average of 7,222-dollar-a-cinema.
