Los Angeles: Director Stanley Kubrick`s 1980 psychological horror film ‘The Shining’, starring Jack Nicholson, is to be re-released in UK cinemas for Halloween this year.
The British Film Institute alongwith Warner Brothers plan to release the US version of the film, never before released in the UK.
The film will be shown at around 120 screens in at least 20 sites, The Hollywood Reporter said.
The US version is 144 minutes long, some 24 minutes longer than the European version previously released here in 1980.
Based on Stephen King`s bestselling novel, Kubrick`s tale of a family man and would-be writer (Nicholson) going mad as winter caretaker of the cursed Overlook Hotel is a seminal work of the genre.
Kubrick`s film has been described as a masterpiece of modern horror and is widely considered to be one of the most terrifying movies ever made.
However, at the time of release both Kubrick and lead actress Shelley Duvall were nominated for Razzie Awards for the film.
Martin Scorsese has pointed out the movie is like no other horror film ever made, describing it as "essentially unclassifiable, endlessly provocative and profoundly disturbing."
In the run-up to Halloween, Kubrick`s original trailer, newly re-mastered ahead of the release, will also be shown in British theatres.
