Los Angeles: Actor Johnny Depp says he is fascinated with technology and its connection with power in his latest role in sci-fi thriller `Transcendence`.
Depp, who is currently busy promoting his upcoming movie in China, is well-known for his unusual choice of roles and with `Transcendence`, he has forayed into the genre of big budget sci-fi movies.
Commenting on why he took up the role of a mad scientist, he said in a statement: "What fascinated me more than anything is the co-relation between technology and power - the idea that a guy who is able to download his sentient being into a machine can become god, or a version of god. Religion is a fascinating black hole to me."
Produced by Christopher Nolan and directed by celebrated cinematographer Wally Pfister, `Transcedence` is the story of Will Caster, an artificial intelligence researcher who strives to create a machine that possesses sentience and collective intelligence.
`Transcendence` hits Indian theaters April 18.
