Ex show exec Nigel Lythgoe justifies end of 'American Idol'

Washington: Nigel Lythgoe feels that it was indeed time to put the legendary show 'American Idol' to bed.

The 65-year-old former executive producer of the show was a bit surprised when the news broke, but believes that it would actually enhance the show's legacy, TMZ.com reported.

It's better to leave a little early than a little late, he added.

Fox confirmed that their long-running talent show will shut the curtains after its 15th season. It would be a 'celebratory event' paying tribute to former contestants, winners and fans and would be broadcast next year.

The show, which was launched in 2002 by Simon Fuller and Simon Cowell, will see the current judges Jennifer Lopez, Harry Connick Jr and Keith Urban return, along with host Ryan Seacrestfor the finale season.
