2013: Bollywood dances to tunes of quirk and romance

New Delhi: Bollywood music was at its wackiest and melodious best this year, as it was all about oodles of romance along with ample quirky lyrics. On one hand music directors made us shake our `Tooh`, do the `Lungi Dance` and `Tamanche pe Disco`, on the other there were ballads like `Tum Hi Ho`, `Sawaar Loo`, `Yaram` for the hopeless romantics. `Go Goa Gone` arguably qualifies as the wackiest music album of the year. Composer duo Sachin-Jigar`s number `Khoon Choos Le` is the first anti-Monday anthem that cribs about going to office on a Monday. The album consists of one hilarious number leading to another. `Babaji Ki Booty`, a rib ticking `pravachan` style song which in a funny way mocks at spiritual gurus, `babaji` and their `booti` (dope). After `Fevicol Se` last year, Kareena Kapoor did it again this year with `Chingam Chabake` and `Tooh` from `Gori Tere Pyar Mein`. `Tooh`, which means bum in Punjabi has been designed to rock the wedding season. If these were not enough, Vishal-Shekhar`s another composition from the album `Dhat Teri Ki` raised the bizzare quotient a notch higher. Actor Shahid Kapoor may not have managed to score many hits this year with his movies, but he sure did raise the entertainment quotient with the songs. Be it `Khali Peeli Tokne Ka Nahi` or `Dhating Naach` from `Phata Poster Nikla Hero`, the songs have been a hit from the masses. Even his numbers `Gandi Baat` and `Saree Ke Fall Sa` from his latest release `R... Rajkumar`, which has been composed by Pritam, are catchy and emerged as big hits on the music charts. Ranbir Kapoor-Deepika Padukone starrer `Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani` music album was full of fun, frolic, celebration and innocent naughtiness. The chartbusting party trumpet loaded number, `Badtameeez Dil` was very addictive with its mad gibberish but highly endearing lyrics. Other tracks in this Pritam composed album consisted of `Balam Pichkari`, `Dilliwaali Girlfriend`, `Ghagra.. Via Agra`, a folksy `nautanki` dance number picturized on Madhuri Dixit.(MORE) PTI JCH The music in Sanjay Leela Bhansali`s latest offing `Ram Leela` was perfect mix of folk and fusion with a pinch of quirly lyrics with tracks like `Ishqyaun Dhishqyaun`, `Tattad Tattad` and `Ram Chahe Leela`. `Lazy lad` from `Ghanchakkar`, `Oye boy Charlie` from `Matru Ki Bijli Ka Mandola`, `Tamanche Pe Disco` from Bullett Raja` and `Lungi Dance` from SRK starrer `Chennai Express` also contributed to Bollywood`s tryst with quirk. The super success of the music of Bhatt camp`s `Aashiqui 2` and Vikramaditya Motwane`s `Lootera` proved that romance, which is the forte of Bollywood, is still very much alive and kicking. With songs like `Sun Raha Hain Na Tu`, `Tum Hi Ho`, `Chahu Main Ya Na`, `Aashiqui 2` was an album that had set its heart in the right place. The music for the Mohit Suri-directed film was composed by Jeet Ganguly, Mithoon and Ankit Tiwari. Arijit Singh has sung six songs out of the 11 on the album. `Lootera` featured music and background score by Amit Trivedi with all song lyrics penned by Amitabh Bhattacharya. One instantly fell in love with this superb love ballads that had an old world charm about it. The first song from the film `Sawaar Loo` had enchanting background musical arrangements, which was spell binding when teamed with Monali Thakur`s rendition. Another love song from the film which hooked listeners to it was `Monta Re`, which had the rustic flavor of Bengal not only in terms of tune but also for the use of the easily understandable Bengali language. AR Rahman returned to the Bollywood music scene with a bang in Aanand L Rai`s `Raanjhanaa`. The song which was the center of attention ever since its first teaser, `Tum Tak`, an excellent love ballad. There are many components in the number like `qawwali`, `bhajan`, semi-classical notes and Javed Ali excels with support from Pooja Av and Keerti Sagathia. Raanjhanaa`s title track was a great fusion of Hindustani classical and western symphony sung by Sukhwinder and Shiraz Uppal. Amit Trivedi scored another hit this year with his warm and earthy Gujarat-inspired music in `Kai Po Che`. The composer`s emotive base vocals conveyed the motivational message through some superb lyrics in the song `Manja`. `Meethi Boliyaan` was another inspirational track that had a soft rock touch to it and a catchy rhythm. `Yaaram`, composed by Vishal Bharadwaj and penned by Gulzar from `Ek Thi Daayan`, was one song which made up for the almost bland album of the supernatural thriller. The fun romantic ballad, about typical daily chores, begins with light music that is soothing and picks up the tempo towards the end. Sona Mahapatra`s rustic voice complimented the slow number `Ambarsariya` in `Fukrey`. The lyrics have been adapted by Munna Dhiman from an old Punjabi folk song, which music director Ram Sampath has reinvented in his style. Other romantic numbers which were chartbusters this year are `Beintehaan` from `Race 2`, `Subhanallah` from `Yeh Jawani Hain Deewani`, `Titli` from `Chennai Express`. Many old classic songs were also reprised this year. `Kisi Ke Haath Na Ayegi` from Chaalbaaz which was picturised on Sridevi was revived as a male version for John Abraham starrer `I, Me aur Main`. `Mast Kalandar` and `Naino Mein Sapna` were also given a makeover this year.
