Chennai: Remakes of blockbuster film seldom do get equal appreciation for they are nothing but duplication. But ‘Nanban’, which happens to be a Tamil version of Bollywood superhit film ‘3 Idiots’ has pulled it off with élan.
Though the story line was pretty apparent, filmmaker Shankar has successfully been able to keep the audiences glued to their seats. Superstar Ilaya Thalapathi Vijay along with Jeeva and Srikanth have given fantabulous performances, thereby proving that they are indeed Tamil Nadu’s adorable ‘3 Idiots’. Though there are minor glitches, the overall treatment to the film is highly appreciable. Vijay is outstanding as Panchavan Paarivendan or Paari, who happens to show little interest in the way education, is handled in Ideal Engineering College. Despite being a cutely notorious student, he comes out with flying colours during examinations. Srikanth plays Venkatraman while Jeeva plays Sevarkodi Senthil, who are only interested in scoring handsomely to find a lucrative job and to make their parents happy. Satyan plays Silencer, the irritating class-mate of the trio who pretends to be the most studious. While veteran actor Sathyaraj plays Virumandi Sandhanam alias Virus, the eccentric principal of the college, who makes life miserable for the three thick friends. Ileana D’Cruz is the one who gets Paari hooked to her love nest but the shy boy tries hard to keep away from her. Harris Jayaraj’s music is a bit of a disappointment. And Ileane proves nothing more than an eye-candy! T Muthuraj’s art Direction is worth applause and so is Manoj Paramahamsa`s cinematography. Anthony could have sharpened his editing scissors but overall it’s a film that’s a must watch. It’s the best gift Vijay could have given to his diehard fans this Pongal. Ratings: Four Cheers for this one.
