Waterfalls have always been a place for romance. Many a passionate scene has been shot under the waterfalls and they look exquisite.
Not only are they majestic, but also nature at its best. India has some picturesque waterfalls all around the country. Here is a list of five of the most beautiful falls in the country.
Chitrakote Waterfalls
Located in Jagdalpur, Chhattisgarh, it is the widest fall in India, about 300 metres (980 ft). Because of its shape, it has been named the ‘the Small Niagara Falls’. It looks the most beautiful during the rainy season when the mist of the waterfall reflects the sunlight and it looks as if thousands of rainbows have formed over the waterfall.
Ethipothala
Located on the Chandravanka river, a tributary of the River Krishna, this Waterfall is a combination of three streams namely Chandravanka Vagu, Nakkala Vagu and Tummala Vagu. Interestingly, the pond formed by the water fall is a crocodile breeding centre. In the evenings the waterfall literally becomes enchanting with the setting sun playing the cascade. The water changes colour.
Hogenakkal Falls
These falls are situated in the Dharmapuri district of the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, on the river Kaveri. Most people can experience the scenic boat rides (the little round boats) near the waterfall. Boating is allowed only during the dry time of year during the time the waterfalls are not powerful enough to disturb them.
Jog Falls
Also called Gerosoppa Falls, it is the second-highest plunge waterfall in the country. Surrounded by lush green forests and misty deep valleys, Jog is a tourists' delight. It was declared to be one of the top ten UNESCO ecological hot spots in the world. The best time to visit? Undoubtedly right after the monsoons – July to October, when the falls are at its majestic best.

Nohsngithiang Falls or Mawsmai Falls, as it's also known as, is just one of the many beautiful water fronts in the state of Meghalaya. The local folklore of each of these waterfalls is enchanting and adds to the magic of these picturesque locales steeped in nature and culture
