Jabalpur: Decks have been cleared for
holding civic polls in Madhya Pradesh following the dismissal
of a petition by the High Court challenging the state
government`s decision to provide 50 per cent reservation to
women in these elections.

The petition was dismissed by a division bench of
Justices Deepak Mishra and R K Gupta who termed the decision
of the state government as "Constitutional".

The decision to provide 50 per cent reservation to women
in the upcoming local bodies polls was challenged by Krishna
Gharde of National Students Union of India (NSUI) and
Transport Association President Ashok Malpani.

Ruling out objections of the petitioners, the bench said
that though the Supreme Court had put a cap on providing
not more than 50 per cent reservation to SC/ST and OBC, the
state government has powers to provide 50 per cent horizontal
reservation in all the categories to women in order to empower
them.
