Four Mumbai girls win medals at Special Olympics

Four mentally challenged girls from Mumbai have won medals at the Special Olympics, held at Athens.

Mumbai: Four mentally challenged girls from the city have won medals at the Special Olympics, held at Athens last month, the NGO `Children`s Aid Society` said on Monday.
Sakhu Nagarkar bagged two gold and a silver medal in Badminton while Heena bagged a bronze in volleyball at the Olympics. Kavita Chavan got a bronze medal in handball while Mery Manda bagged a silver and a bronze in cycling. They were accompanied by a special teacher as a coach.The NGO runs `Pitruvatsalya` institute for mentally challenged children for treatment, development and rehabilitation, upto the age of 18.It caters to 170 girls and 130 boys. In 2003, N K Vimal, representing the institute at the Special Olympics, won a silver medal in swimming. The state government`s minister for women and child development, Varsha Gaikwad, who is also the vice-president of the Children`s Aid Society, felicitated the medal-winners at a function recently. PTI
