Petaling Jaya: Seasoned customer Gaurav Ghei soared into title contention with a strong four-under 67 that had him tied eighth -- three shots off lead -- after the halfway stage of the Selangor Masters golf tournament.
Overall, six Indians made the cut while the trio of Himmat Rai (146), Chirag Kumar (146) and Manav Jaini (150) failed to make the cut at the Seri Selangor Golf Club.
Overnight tied 34th, Ghei went on to return the lone sub-par card by an Indian on the second day of the USD 300,000 Asian Tour event to aggregate four-under 138 and position himself for a top finish.Digvijay Singh turned in an even-par card, while Rahil Gangjee went one-over to share the 18th place at 140.
Anirban Lahiri (141), overnight tied sixth, could not maintain the good work and went three-over 74 to slip to tied 30th.
Pre-tournament favourite Gaganjeet Bhullar barely made the cut after carding 71 to join C Muniyappa, who returned 74, at the 62nd place with a two-day total of 145.
A 10th tee starter, Ghei birdied four of his first eight holes but was two-under at the turn after dropping a couple of bogeys.
The three-time Asian Tour winner birdied the first and third holes in his bogey-free front nine to settle for a four-under card.
