New Delhi: As the Bharatiya Janata Party and its supporters go gaga over Narendra Modi’s victory, Press Council chairman Justice Markandey Katju seems to be unhappy with the development claims made by the Gujarat Chief Minister. In his blog, Katju noted that child malnutrition in Gujarat is at 48 percent, which is “far higher than the poorest African sub Saharan countries of Somalia and Ethiopia where the rate is about 33 percent.” “When Modi was confronted with this he said that girls in Gujarat do not eat or drink milk for fear of becoming fat, the people are vegetarians, etc which is all nonsense. Should the Gujarati children eat the factories, roads and electricity Modi has created,” Katju wrote. The former Supreme Court judge also underlined that rural poverty in the state is 51 percent. The PCI chairpersons further asked: “What about the standard of living of the masses in Gujarat? The figures paint a totally different picture.” He, however, expressed faith that the people of Gujarat will one day learn the truth.
