Mumbai: Egyptian Marwan Shorbagy and Malaysia’s Delia Arnold on Saturday clinched the men’s and women’s titles respectively in the Rs 11 lakh ISP-Minute Maid Squash Carnival jointly hosted by Khar and Vile Parle Gymkhanas here.
The aggressive tactics and attacking style of second seed Shorbagy proved too good for the defensive, consistent style of play adopted by top seed Kamran Khan of Malaysia in the final, leading to a 11-3 11-8 12-10 victory for the former who pocketed the top prize of Rs 1.5 lakh. Kamran saved two match points in the final game to draw level at 10-10, but a backhand error followed by a forehand winner by his rival ended his hopes. In the women’s title clash, top seed and world No. 20 Delia packed too much firepower for her second seeded countrywoman Siti Munirah Jusoh to handle and won 11-2, 11-6, 11-9 without any hint of trouble.Mahesh Mangaonkar, who lost to Kamran in three straight games in the men’s semifinal, and Saumya Karki, the top seeds in the boys and girls under 19, emerged comfortable winners in their categories. Former men’s national champion Manish Chotrani won the men’s over-35 title, while his son Veer laid claim to the boys under-11 title. PTI
